She must have spent her childhood playing on the river bank at Milford where the Alexander family ran the mill that supplied the malted barley to the Guinness brewery in Dublin.
When she was 24 Mary married James Mooney from Dublin. James worked for
the Grand Canal Company that operated the barges that transported the barley on the rivers and canals to the south of Dublin.
It is likely that Mary met James socially in and around Milford or Ballinabranagh or even in Carlow town itself which is just four miles away.
In any event they married in Dublin on February 5th 1888.
